President Hassan Rouhani said in a meeting with visiting Indonesian foreign minister, Retno Marsudi, on Wednesday. The president further voiced regret that some Muslim countries have been gripped by terrorism and extremism.
“For fighting terrorism, we don't have to wait for others as Muslim countries enjoy enough power and options tor clearing the [Middle East] region from terrorists.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president also called for enhanced ties with Indonesia, emphasizing that Iran is ready to expand ties with Jakarta in all fields of interest.
Rouhani also appreciated special efforts made by Indonesian President Joko Widodo for promoting dialogue and boosting unity in the Muslim world. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim nation.
The Indonesian foreign minister praised the current level and state of ties between the two nations.
Marsudi said that the two sides will certainly enjoy broader ties in the future. She also added that Iran-Indonesia unity would help strengthen stability and peace and in the region.
Before her trip to Tehran, Marsudi discussed the current diplomatic rift between Iran and Saudi Arabia in a phone conversation with the European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.
According to a statement released by Mogherini’s office, the two diplomats agreed “to continue cooperating on future initiatives that could help appease the situation.”

The foreign ministry also expressed sympathy with the Indonesian government and nation in general, expressing hope that such terror attacks would not hamper Indonesians’ will to promote Islam. “Such terrorist acts, in a country where restraint and moderation are the defining characteristics of its people and has always been one of the frontrunners in the United Nations peacekeeping missions in the world, once again proved that terrorism and extremism have no boundary.”
Jaberi Ansari insisted that Iran stands by the Indonesian nation and administration in combating terrorism.
The spokesman further urged a tough response to the perpetrators and supporters of acts of terrorism
The senior diplomat also heighted the need for a united and global fight against the ominous phenomenon.
Earlier on Thursday, the Indonesian capital was hit by a string of explosions and a gunfight at a major shopping and business district near foreign embassies and the United Nations offices. At least seven people, including four attackers were killed in Thursday’s incidents.
