Iranians mark anniversary of US Embassy takeover

Founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Rouhollah Imam Khomeini later hailed the effort as 'a second revolution' with a greater significance.

Iranians from all walks of life each year begin nationwide rallies to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, dubbed the 'den of espionage'.

In the capital Tehran, people each year take to the streets to participate in the mass rallies commemorating the historic occasion, known in Iran as “13th of Aban,” and the “Student Day.” Aban is the eighth month of the Iranian calendar.

On November 4, 1979, a group of revolutionary Iranian university students took over the US Embassy which they believed had turned into a den of espionage which aimed to overthrow the nascent Islamic Republic establishment.

Documents found at the compound later corroborated claims by revolutionary students that the US was using its Tehran embassy to plot to overthrow the new Islamic establishment of Iran.

They day  is observed in Iran to reject all so-called super powers and colonial policies and students appeal the international community to pursue the rule of mutual respect and sovereignty of all nations.
