Imam Khomeini insisted on significance of spiritual freedoms

The founder of the Islamic Republic believed that the blessed month of Ramadan provides great opportunities for the mankind to accomplish self-purification and spiritual freedoms.

Imam Khomeini the world religious and spiritual leader used to emphasize on self-purification, self-training, self-development, offering sacrifices and adopting other divine virtues during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Friends and family members also say that Imam Khomeini used to become more spiritual during this holy month and advised others to purify their souls before entering this month of great significance.

The great leader of the world used to attach special significance to reciting the holy book of Quran and supplications during the holy month of Ramadan.

Imam continued his special schedule before and after becoming the great founder of the Islamic Revolution.

He used to stick a very regular program of self-purification even during tough periods of exile. Imam used to believe that the access to real freedoms were impossible unless the mankind had have accomplished the spatula freedoms.

According to Imam, the holy month of Ramadan offered a great opportunity for getting rid of greed, hatred, back-biting, enmity and other devil-type attributes.

Imam Khomeini’s family members say he used to recite the full Quran at least for three times until the end of the holy month.

Despite his busy schedule, Imam was committed to reciting special supplications narrated by the holy prophet and his infallible truthful successors.

Dua Iftetah (inauguration), Daua Shahr (Dawn) and Dua Abu Hamza Thumali were among the supplications that had attracted the special attentions of the founder of the Islamic Republic are as following:

Imam Khomeini stayed in the holy city of Najaf about 14 years and used to tolerate the chilling heat of the region during the summer season. He used to observe fast during the long days.

The domestic servant or helper who came to gather dishes after the dawn meal during Ramadan once said to Imam's spouse regarding his food habit as following:
“Honorable lady when I take tray from Imam after dawn meal, I feel nothing of the food stuffs have been consumed. Imam just eats half of a small piece of kutlet (a small piece of cooked traditional Iranian Kebab made from potatoes and minced meat)”.
Imam used to keep fast during these tough long days with the harsh summer conditions.

Imam Khomeini in his famous book of the combat with the self invites devotees to prepare themselves mentally and spiritually for the blessed divine days.

Imam Khomeini emphasized that during the holy month of Ramadan,  blessed month of Ramadan, you should reflect, reform yourselves, and pay attention to God Almighty, seek forgiveness for your unbecoming behavior and deeds, and if, God forbid, you have committed a sin, repent for it prior to entering the blessed month of Ramadan. Habituate your tongue to intimate devotions to God the Almighty.

According to Imam Khomeini, God forbid that in the blessed month of Ramadan you should backbite or slander, or in short, sin, and so become polluted by transgression in the presence of the Lord, the Exalted, at His feast. You have been invited during this honorable month to the banquet of God the Almighty, "and you have been invited in it to the feast of Allah," so, get yourself ready for the magnificent feast of the Almighty. At least respect the formal and exoteric manners of fasting. (The true manners of fasting are another matter entirely, and require constant care and effort.)

The great Imam says the meaning of fasting is not merely refraining from eating and drinking, one must also keep oneself from sin. This is the primary etiquette of fasting for novices. (The etiquette of fasting for divine people who want to reach the mine of greatness is other than this) You should at least observe the primary etiquette of fasting, and in the same way that you refrain from eating and drinking, you should keep your eyes, ears and tongue from transgression.

Imam Khomeini notes that from now on, keep your tongue from backbiting, slander, speaking bad, and lies, and expel from your hearts all spite, envy, and other ugly satanic attributes. If you are able, cut yourself off from all but Allah. Perform your deeds sincerely and without duplicity. Cut yourselves off from the devils among humans and the Jinn, although we ourselves apparently cannot aspire to reaching such a valuable state of felicity. At least try to see to it that your fast is not accompanied by sin.

Otherwise, even if your fast is correct from the point of view of Islamic law, it will not ascend to be accepted by God.

Several pundits believe that if Imam’s recommendations for the blessed month of Ramadan can prevent the human societies form falling into pits of moral and social decline.
