Mikhail Gorbachev and other officials from former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) were deeply impressed by contents of Imam’s historic letter which intended to prevent the former communist country from falling into moral, social and political decline at very sensitive juncture of history.
The historic letter left deep impact on the world views and Gorbachev himself came to this conclusion that the sender of the letter was a great intellectual who was concerned about the fate of the whole globe.
Gorbachev also studied the letter carefully and discussed with members of their supreme council and they all glanced at the spiritual contents with great zeal and respect.
According to Soviet Union officials, they implemented some reforms following the reception of the letter and planned some religious freedoms for followers of the religions. However they believe the situation could be different if they had taken it more seriously.
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli On January 3rd 1989, as the representative of Imam led a delegation and left Tehran for Moscow to deliver the letter. The message was read with delineating some important points and then the Kremlin's special interpreters translated it for Gorbachev.
Imam Khomeini, the great intellectual and mystic of the Islamic world had invited the former head of Soviet Union to seriously study and research Islam.
The founder of the Islamic Republic also said that communism had absolutely failed in responding to the material and spiritual needs of the young generations.
The great leader announced that the seminaries and intellectuals in Iran were ready to extend their moral support for the satisfaction of spiritual needs of the Russian and other Eastern bloc’s societies.
The wise leader also predicted that from now on communism will only have to be found in the museums of world political history.
The Soviet Union finally collapsed in December 1991 as the world watched in amazement, and the communist state disintegrated into several separate countries.
The great Imam had also warned the international community that the global arrogance and the imperialist powers were also descending into moral chaos and decline.
The founder of the Islamic Republic suggested that they could evade collapse only if these societies resort to human values and divine religion.
Thousands of analyses by the world intellectuals have been written to analyze the contents of the letter over the past years.
