Thousands converge on Imam Khomeini shrine on 30th passing anniversary

Thousands of Iranians and devotees from across Iran and the world have converged on the holy mausoleum of Imam Khomeini to mark 30th passing anniversary of the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Mourners from all walks of life have converged on Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum in southern Tehran on Tuesday to pay homage to the architect of the Islamic Revolution and renew allegiance to the ideals of the 1979 Revolution.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei is due to deliver a speech at the event later in the day.

Some 50 foreign correspondents and 300 Iranian reporters will be covering the event.

Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Rouhollah Mousavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, passed away on June 3, 1989 at the age of 87.

He devoted many years of his life to standing up to the US-backed Pahlavi dynasty, and eventually paved the way for its downfall in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. (local time), there will be special events at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini (RA) in southern Tehran to pay tribute to “the architect of the Islamic Republic.”

Mourners from across the country, as well as high-ranking Iranian officials along with groups of foreign guests and ambassadors will take part in the commemoration ceremony.

Every year, large crowds of Iranians travel to Tehran from different parts of the country on this day to pay tribute to Imam Khomeini at his shrine.

Imam Khomeini won hearts and minds of all believers and faithful people of contemporary era.
