In a fallacious tweet on Wednesday, Trump wrote that “Democrats and President Obama gave Iran 150 Billion Dollars”, arguing that they should pay $5 billion for the Mexico border wall.
Trump, who has vowed to stop the inflow of Latin American refugees and immigrants seeking asylum in the US by building a wall on the border with Mexico but has so far failed to do so due to lacking a funding, has uttered numerous lies about Iran to push his agenda through.
The truth about payments to Iran is that the Obama administration paid $1.7 billion to Iran in 2016 to settle legal disputes over a sale of military equipment to Tehran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Iranian officials have already dismissed Trump’s claim that Iran's frozen assets in overseas banks amounted to around $150 billion.
In total, $29 billion of Iranian cash has been blocked as a result of US sanctions, the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) announced in 2015.
CBI - to which the bulk of frozen assets belongs – says $23 billion belongs to it, while the remaining $6-$7 billion is the government's revenues from the sales of crude oil.
