Significance of Assembly of Experts in Islamic-democratic system

In February 26, 2016, Iranians went to the polls to elect 88 jurisprudential experts out of more than 800 prospective candidates for the 5th Assembly of Experts.

In late February 2016 elections for the 10th Majlis (parliament) and the 5th Assembly of Experts were held in Iran.

 The first elections for the Assembly of Experts were held in December 1982 and the Assembly convened in 1983. Seventy-six of the total 83 members were elected in the first round, the rest in the second.

In March 1979, a national referendum was held with the question "Islamic Republic, yes or no.” Some 98.2 percent of the voters said "yes". Following this victory, the Iranian constitution of 1906 was declared invalid and a new constitution for an Islamic Republic was drafted and ratified by a referendum during the first week of December in 1979.

The current Assembly of Experts, which is the fifth one, was elected last year.

The qualifications criteria for the senior clerical body include Islamic scholarship, justice, piety, political discernment and social perspicacity, prudence, courage and adequate capability for the task itself.

The Assembly of Experts is tasked with appointing the Leader and monitoring his performance.

One of the most important activity that the Assembly of Experts is in charge of, is overlooking and basically examining the performance of the country’s leader.

Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic revolution through his speeches and historic messages highlighted the significance of the Assembly of Experts in the Islamic-Republic system.

Iran’s Assembly of Experts for the Leadership was established in 1982 under Article 107 of the Iranian constitution. Nearly 90 members are popularly elected every eight years and they should all be Islamic jurisprudence scholars. 

Iranian Revolution under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini emerged victorious in 1979 and set best pattern of Islamic-democratic government. The Islamic system resulted in significant progress of the Iranian nation and strengthened all Muslim and oppressed people across the globe.
