Anniversary ceremony starts at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum

This comes as Iran commemorates the 28th anniversary of the passing of the Islamic Republic’s late founder, Imam Khomeini, on Sunday.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has started delivering a keynote speech at the spiritual event at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum in southern Tehran.

The event is being attended by people from various walks of life, several top Iranian officials as well as foreign dignitaries.

Thousands of people including senior officials have already converged on the holy site to renew allegiance with ideals of Imam Khomeini, the leader of world’s freedom-seekers and oppressed nations.

This year’s ceremony is being held afternoon due to its coincidence with the blessed fasting month of Ramadan. A feast of fast breaking has been arranged after the sestet for devotees attending the spiritual gathering.

Imam Khomeini founded the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979, following years of exile.

He passed away 10 years later at the age of 87. The iconic leader led the nation’s struggle against the ruling Pahlavi monarchy.
