Ceremony set to begin at Imam Khomeini’s holy shrine

A ceremony marking passing away 28th anniversary of Imam Khomeini is set to begin at the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

This year’s ceremony is being held afternoon due to its coincidence with the blessed fasting month of Ramadan. A feast of fast breaking has been arranged after the sestet for devotees attending the spiritual gathering.

Thousands of people including senior officials have already converged on the holy site to renew allegiance with ideals of Imam Khomeini, the leader of world’s freedom-seekers and oppressed nations.

The developments come as millions of Iranians are marking the anniversary of the eternal departure of Imam Khomeini, 28 years ago. The anniversary of his passing falls on Sunday this year.  

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will address the gathering of mourners at the shrine.

Imam had contributed many years of his life to standing up to the US-backed Pahlavi dynasty. 

Imam Khomeini, who eventually paved the way for its downfall in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, challenged colonial powers and confronted their dominance by restoring awareness among the oppressed nations.  

Imam Khomeini is considered a high-caliber religious scholar, is followed by followers of various divine religions and freedom seekers.

Imam, who passed away on June 03 1989, revived divine values at a sensitive juncture of history when the world had been plunged into social and moral decline and was divided into Eastern and Western blocs under dominance of colonial powers.
