Iran holds International Nowrruz festival

An international festival has been held to mark Nowruz, which commences the beginning of spring and start of the New Persian Year.

The festival was held in Golestan palace complex and was attended by Iranian First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and several other senior officials and public figures.

A number of artists and people from various walks of life also attended the event, where speeches were delivered and on the sidelines artists displayed their professional performance.

This comes as Iran has ushered in the new Persian year of 1396.

Nowruz is rooted in ancient Iranian culture and marked by large family gatherings, gifts for children, vacations and spring cleaning, called 'house shaking' in Persian.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier underlined the need for interaction and peace in his message to the leaders of 11 countries that also mark the occasion. The message was separately sent to the leaders of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Uzbekistan.

It is worthy to mention that Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Revolution used to recommend the believers to spiritually and morally transform and decorate with themselves on the auspicious occasion of Nowruz, which is rebirth of nature.
