Imam Khomeini sought effective role by OIC

Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, through his historic speeches and messages had recommended the Muslim nations and officials to use the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to solve major problems facing the Muslim world.

The late founder of the Islamic Republicwanted the OIC, which represents 57 countries,  to be used for resolving problems facing the Muslim people around the globe.

Imam Khomeini also advised all Muslim countries to raise the issue of Palestine on the international arenas and spare no efforts to expose crimes being committed by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people.

In the latest development, OIC has recently held an emergency meeting in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to discuss regional issues, including the ongoing military crackdown against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The organization’s special envoy to Myanmar, Syed Hamid Albar, has called on the United Nations (UN) to intervene in Myanmar’s northwestern Rakhine State, where he says the escalation of violence against Rohingya Muslims could lead to “genocide.”

Albar said the world body should act to resolve the conflict, which is no longer an internal issue but an international concern.

“We don’t want to see another genocide like in Cambodia or Rwanda,” the special envoy said, adding, “The international community just observed, and how many people died? We have lessons from the past for us to learn from and see what we can do.”

Speaking at a special meeting of foreign ministers of the OIC in Kuala Lumpur, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif urged the Muslim world to unite in support of the Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. The top Iranian diplomat also criticized the international community for turning a blind eye to the plight of the persecuted minority.

“Unfortunately, horrific images of drowned Muslim children on seashores have made no headlines in media worldwide,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Rakhine has been the scene of communal violence at the hands of Buddhist extremists over the past years. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have been forced from their homes and flee neighboring countries.

The Myanmar government denies full citizenship to the 1.1 million-strong Rohingya Muslims who are believed to be a community of ancient lineage in Myanmar.

The UN has warned that the ongoing human rights violations against the Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine could be tantamount to “crimes against humanity.”
