Leader hosts memorial service for Ayatollah Rafsanjani

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has hosted the mourning ceremony which was attended by Iranian and foreign officials.

The service was held at Imam Khomeini Hosseiniyeh in memory of venerable cleric and politician, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who passed away on Sunday.

The Wednesday event was joined by the bereaved family of the late iconic cleric, President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani, and other government and military officials.

The ceremony was also attended by Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Ja’afari, leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq Ammar al-Hakim as well as a number of other foreign dignitaries.

Rafsanjani was laid to rest at holy shrine of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic following a large funeral procession on Tuesday. The mausoleum, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims, tourists and officials each year, is located in southern Tehran 

Ayatollah Rasfanjani, known as a defining force in the 1979 victory of the Revolution, was among the main aides to Imam Khomeini.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who played an influential role both during the anti-Shah struggles before the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and afterwards through various stages of the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, served as the first head of Iran’s post-Revolution parliament. He was later also elected president for two consecutive terms.

Rafsanjani was the chairman of the Expediency Council, a position he kept until his departure.

The iconic cleric was a great religious scholar who also left several theological works, including a comprehensive commentary on holy Quran.
