Imam Khomeini enshrined democratic values

Today, 37th years ago, on the 12th of the Iranian month of Farvardin, corresponding to 1st of April, the Iranian nation, voted to establish Islamic Republic system.

Imam Khomeini recommended that all means must be resorted and all coordinated efforts should be undertaken to organize the referendum immediately after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

In the historic vote, Iranian nation unanimously voted in favor of establishment of the Islamic Republic system of government.

The Islamic-democratic system was largely based on religious values and the aspirations of the mass public. 

 This landmark referendum marks a milestone in the history of the Islamic Revolution.  

An overwhelming majority of Iranians chose to replace the overthrown despotic regime of Shah with the Islamic-Republic system, which was based on divine, humane and democratic values. 

Following the popular vote, the elections as an accepted and vital norms was institutionalized in the structure of the Islamic system. 

It is notable that several individuals and officials had asked Imam to hold vote at a later suitable stage as people have demonstrated their trust at his leadership during massive rallies in support of the Islamic Revolution. 

However, Imam issued all necessary recommendations to hold referendum immediately as he sought people massive participation in all crucial decisions of state as a vital. 

Following the victory of the Islamic Revolution under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini, Iran held several presidential, parliamentary and Assembly of Experts votes over the nearly past four decades. 

Imam Khomeini through his messages, speeches and works had frequently stressed the massive participation of people in all fields, including political, cultural and cultural affairs.
