Millions of Iranian voters are going to the polls to choose new lawmakers as well as members of the Assembly of Experts.
Polls opened at 8:00 local time (0430 GMT) and are slated to close at 18:00 (1430 GMT) across the country on Friday.
However, voting hours could be extended if the need arises amid expectations of a high turnout.
According to Iran’s Interior Ministry, there are 52,000 polling stations with 120,000 ballot boxes across the country
About 55 million Iranians are eligible to vote in the two elections.
Iranians are voting for the country’s 290-seat parliament and the 88-member Assembly of Experts.
Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani has said that the vote counting will begin as soon as the polls are closed.
Rahmani noted that opinion polls and estimates showed the turnout would be at around 70 percent.
Senior Iranian officials and all political parties have called for mass participation of people in the crucial vote.
It is noteworthy that Imam Khomeini frequently through his messages used to emphasize the need for active participation and massive turn out for elections.
According to Imam, people living in towns and cities are equal responsible to heed to this duty of great significance by casting their ballots.
The founder of the Islamic Republic once said in a historic message that all people including those who have some objections to the system should actively participate in elections for the sake of dignity and progress of the nation.
Islamic Revolution emerged victorious under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini by relying on faith in God, the Almighty, and massive backing of people.
Imam Khomeini also instructed to organize a historic referendum immediately following the triumphant of the revolution in 1979.
Iran has held several presidential, parliamentary and Assembly of Expert elections over the past decades.
