Nimr execution will 'topple Saudi regime'

Former Iraq Premier al-Maliki says the execution of Nimr al-Nimr will topple Saudi regime'.

Nouri al-Maliki, the former prime minister of Iraq, has said that the execution of the prominent Shia cleric Sheikh al-Nimrby Saudi authorities will resulted in downfall of Al Saud monarchy.

Al-Maliki said in a statement that his countrymen "strongly condemn these detestable sectarian practices and affirm that the crime of executing Sheikh al-Nimr will topple the Saudi regime as the crime of executing the martyr al-Sadr did to Saddam." 

Al-Maliki had been prime minister of Iraq between 2006 and 2014.

Saudi Arabia announced the execution of Sheikh Nimr on Saturday, in defiance of international calls for the release of the prominent Shia cleric.

Activists around the world have also staged large protest rallies to show their anger at the execution of Sheikh Nimr.
