The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has reaffirmed its firm support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital city.
“The Non-Aligned Movement continues to fully support the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state based on UN resolutions with holy al-Quds as its capital,” Dehqani said.
Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East al-Quds, and the Gaza Strip and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Tel Aviv regime, however, has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds.
The senior Iranian diplomat further emphasized the importance of global decolonization, saying the right of all nations to have sovereignty should be respected.
The issue of decolonization must remain among the priorities of the United Nations’ agenda, said Dehqani, calling on colonial powers to compensate for social, economic and cultural damage they have inflicted on their colonies.
“NAM wants UN authorities to make sure the economic and other activities of big powers will not harm the interests of people and colonized states,” added Iran’s envoy to the world body.
The Special Political and Decolonization Committee, also known as the Fourth Committee of General Assembly, deals with a variety of subjects, including those related to decolonization, Palestinian refugees and human rights, and peacekeeping.
